brief bio

Ernie Gerzabek was born in Budapest, Hungary and migrated to Sydney, Australia in his late teens.

He graduated in Architecture at the University of New South Wales, also studied painting and sculpture part time and exhibited in various art shows and group exhibitions. In 1997 he retired from architecture to dedicate more of his time to painting and ceramics.

inspiration

Ernie's primary inspiration is nature - as a manifestation of the Universal Life Force - the world that is timeless and constant while continually changing and transforming.

Ernie believes this Universal Life Force is another way to perceive the existence of a Higher Spirit and its creative force. Every particle in every atom "knows" what to do, every living creature knows how to adapt, survive, grow and reproduce. All this indicates that a Higher Spirit is working in every corner of the Universe.

The Australian landscape with its vastness, extremes of climate and unlimited variety of living things made an indelible impression on the artist. The geography, the specialized vegetation, the struggle for survival in harsh environments - all such themes are a constant source of wonderment.

interpretation and expression

Ernie's interpretation of natural phenomena may be unpredictable and surprising. Rather than depicting nature and recording what the eye sees, he is more interested in evoking a landscape, recording an impression and creating a mood. His broad range of visual expression reflects the kaleidoscopic emotional states we experience.

Typically, his work is exuberant, highly original, vibrant, confident and eye-catching. Many of his paintings are charged with positive energy, richly textured and overflow with dazzling colour. Other pieces are soft, meditative and introspective.

Ernie tends to create playful, decorative and inspiring images, optimistic and spiritually uplifting in nature. The paintings are colourful and imaginative, encouraging contemplation and free interpretation by the viewer. Memories, dreams, free associations and altered states are likely to be recalled, which may take the viewer back to childhood or a secret place long forgotten.

homage to indigenous artistry

Having a great admiration for indigenous art, (which was reinforced by spending some time in Central Australia a few years ago), some of Ernie's paintings pay homage to Australian aboriginal artistry. However, he avoids plagiarism, does not use any aboriginal motives and symbols, such as animal footprints and concentric circles, nor any depiction of sacred images or Dreamings (totems) "owned" by particular individuals or groups. His aim is to build bridges between indigenous and immigrant cultures as part of the Reconciliation process.
